As the Fall season approaches and leaves begin to fall, we wanted to send a friendly reminder
that the disposal of leaves and grass clippings into the lake is detrimental to our water quality and is a
violation of Michigan’s littering law. The breakdown of leaves and grass clippings in the water adds
excessive phosphorus and can deplete the oxygen in the water. This can kill aquatic animals.
Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) recommends dealing
with yard waste by composting it. It can be brought to a local compost facility. These are available in
Olivet, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, and Marshall.
Prevailing winds bring these leaves and grass clippings to the north end of the lake, where they
need to be mucked out. Your neighbors at the north end will appreciate every effort you make to keep
leaves and grass clippings out of our lake.
